Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia.

Approximately 1 in 3 men and 1 in 4 women will be affected by cancer before the age of 75. There were more than 98,000 new cancer cases and 38,000 deaths due to cancer in Australia in 2004.

More than helf of all cancers diagnosed in Australia are successfully treated, and servival rates for some common cancers have increased by more than 20 per cent in the past two decades.
